Creating a Character
A great character is the foundation of great roleplay. These are tips and suggestions to spark your imagination, not hard rules. For the requirements your character must meet, see Character Expectations.
Play Someone Other Than Yourself
Step into someone else's shoes. Create a character who is distinctly different from your real-life self, with their own personality, goals, and flaws.
Keep It Modern and Realistic
Hydrate is set in a world much like the real one: modern-day, with a hint of chaos. Design a character who could plausibly exist in that world.
Avoid characters who are superhuman, wildly exaggerated, or from other time periods or fantasy worlds. Think of people you might actually meet, each with their own quirks and stories.
- A rookie police officer trying to prove themselves.
- A chef with an unexpected knack for gambling.
- A time-travelling wizard or superhero.
Embrace Imperfections
Perfect characters are dull. The most memorable ones have flaws, struggles, or weaknesses, such as trouble trusting others or terrible money habits.
Flaws make your character relatable and create openings for conflict and growth, both essential to great roleplay.
Give Them a Background
Every character has a story. Where did they grow up? What experiences shaped them? What brought them to this city?
A backstory makes it easier to decide how your character reacts and interacts. It doesn't need to be detailed: a few sentences about their past and motivations goes a long way.
Fit Into the Community
Your character should stand out while still fitting into a shared world. Avoid characters who are excessively disruptive or who make it hard for others to interact with you.
For example, instead of someone who refuses to talk to anyone, play someone who interacts reluctantly, even if they're shy or standoffish.
Have Fun and Stay Open-Minded
Roleplay is about having fun. Your character doesn't need to be fully formed from the start: they can evolve as you play. Make mistakes, adapt to the story, and collaborate with others.

- What does my character want most in life?
- What are they afraid of?
- What's their dream job?
- Do they have any unusual habits or hobbies?
- What's one secret they wouldn't want others to know?
