First Time Playing?

We’re excited to have you join Hydrate. To help you create a unique and immersive character that fits into the world, we’ve put together a few tips and suggestions. Remember, these are just guidelines to spark your imagination—not hard rules.

Be Someone Else

One of the joys of roleplay is stepping into someone else’s shoes. We encourage you to create a character that is distinctly different from your real-life self. Think about their personality, goals, and flaws.

Stay Grounded in the Modern-Day Setting

Our server is set in a world very much like the real one—modern-day with a hint of chaos. When designing your character, try to keep them realistic within this context.

While it’s fun to dream big, avoid creating characters who are superhuman, overly exaggerated, or come from other time periods or fantastical worlds. Instead, think of people you might actually meet in the real world—just with their own unique quirks and stories.

Examples:

  • ✅ A rookie police officer trying to prove themselves.
  • ✅ A chef with an unexpected knack for gambling.
  • ❌ A time-travelling wizard or superhero.

Embrace Imperfections

Perfect characters can be dull. The most memorable characters often have flaws, struggles, or weaknesses. Maybe your character struggles to trust others, or is terrible with money.

Flaws make your character more relatable and create opportunities for conflict and growth—both essential ingredients for great RP.

Think About Their Background

Every character has a story. Where did they grow up? What life experiences shaped them? What brought them to this city? Having a backstory (even a simple one) will make it easier to decide how your character reacts to situations and interacts with others.

Tip: Your backstory doesn’t have to be overly detailed. Just a few sentences about their past and motivations can go a long way.

Fit Into the Community

While your character should stand out in their own way, they also need to fit into the broader world of the server. Keep in mind that this is a shared space, so try to avoid characters who are excessively disruptive or intentionally make it hard for others to interact with you.

Example: Instead of playing someone who refuses to talk to anyone, think about how your character might reluctantly interact with others, even if they’re shy or standoffish.

Have Fun and Stay Open-Minded

At the end of the day, roleplay is all about having fun. Your character doesn’t need to be perfect from the start—they can evolve as you play. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, adapt to the story, and collaborate with others.

Need Inspiration?

If you’re stuck, try asking yourself these questions:

  • What does my character want most in life?
  • What are they afraid of?
  • What’s their dream job?
  • Do they have any unusual habits or hobbies?
  • What’s one secret they wouldn’t want others to know?
